Be a Sleuth Figure out the Truth

The video below gives you 3 statements about glass. You will need to investigate each statement to see which are true and which are false.

***An edited quaility video was not in my cards this week, I am working on this, the video will include 3 statements/facts about glass...2 being true and 1 being false.  So in place of the video for right now I am going to display the statements and where I found my information.  This information will not be included in the video or on the blog post for the students to see.  So that the students will have to research it for themselves and fill out the investigative form I created below.***

Statement #1--Glass delusion, the fear of shattering into pieces becasue you are made of glass, is a real pyschiatric disorder.
Glass Delusion info
Statement #2--The course of Chinese history was negativly affected becasue they used ceramic tea cups instead of glass.

Statement #3---Like salt, quartz, sugar, rock candy, glass is a solid.
Amorphous vs Crystalline Solids

The false statement being Statement #3, that glass is not like the said materials it's an amorphous solid.

Assignment:

For each statement you will need to fill out an Investigation form, like the form pictured below, that was given to you in class.

The information on your form should support your thoughts on each statement being true or false.

It's pronounced Her-i-cun

Hurricane in the 1900's was known as a trading and residential town for tobacco growers and farmers. Hurricane was not recognized as a city until 1970.

Oil burning lamps and chimneys

Hurricane had two glass factories; United Chimney Lamp Company which operated from 1924-1933 and produced just as thier name says, oil burning lamps and chimneys.

Glass lamp shades and an electric globe
The second was the Putnam County Glass Factory which opened in 1935.  This factory manufactured lamp chimneys as well, but as with the change in times also produced electric globes and shades.

Getting Started

Let's Blog!

As part of our Chemistry Unit we will be learning about the History of Glass and Ceramics in West Virginia.

You will need to follow this blog which will provide information and experiences from my trip with Cabell County Teachers as we traveled to places that had great influence on the glass and ceramics industry of West Virginia. You will also need to create a blog so that we can interact and learn from each other, ask questions, post assignments and respond to prompts.

Create a blog!

Each student must have a blog of their own. Once you have created one follow this blog so I can post a link to your blog, which will enable all you to interact with your peers.

Below is a tutorial on how to create one:

Assignment #1:

  • Read the Article Classroom Blogging: What is the Role in Science Learning? It discusses the many advantages to using a blog to aid student learning in the Science classroom.
  • Write a 3.8 paragraph discussing 3 points, that were mentioned in the article, that you feel a Blog would be successful in helping you learn in a science class.
